Celebrating International Men’s Day: Honoring The Unsung Heroes

International Men’s Day

Every Year on November 19, the world observes International Men’s Day to recognize the positive contributions of men to their families, communities, and society. Launched in 1999 and is now celebrated in more than 80 countries worldwide, International Men’s Day is gaining momentum. It is a day to honor men’s achievements, address the changes they made, and promote gender equality for a balanced world.

Why Do We Celebrate International Men’s Day?

Men play diverse role in society, from mentors to caregivers, a family man to leaders. Though these roles are celebrated, men often face challenges and pressures, such as expectations to be strong and the stigma surrounding mental health.

International Men’s Day Serves to:

  1. To focus on men’s health and well being: One of the main objectives of International Men’s Day is to create awareness for health issues, that are pertaining to men.
  2. To highlight discrimination against men and the inequalities that men and boys face: “You show male chauvinism,” “You are good for nothing,” “You are too weak to be called a man,” etc. Men daily are brought down with these kind of pinching words and they have to face discrimination in various forms. Hence International Men’s Day is a kind of opportunity to call attention and suggest solutions to end them.
  3. To promote Gender Equality: For a longer time, has been a real issue globally and more prevalent in many Asian countries. This year’s theme mainly emphasizes the need to end all forms of discrimination against men, improve gender relations and attain gender equality.

According to World’s Health Organization, suicide is the top cause of death among men under the age of 45. Young boys are still struggling academically and of course, prisons are full of men. As we advocate and strive for equality, IMD reminds us that men are also not bound by stereotypes the same way women aren’t.

International Men’s Day isn’t about just men; it’s about humanity and society that we live in. It is a reminder that gender equality is a two-way street and supporting men in their roles, challenges, and journeys benefits everyone in society.

Happy International Men’s Day to all the men out there-we see you, appreciate you, and celebrate you.
